Ramai swami biography definition

Ramai Swami was born John Patane in Alexandria Egypt to European parents while his father worked there as a Civil Engineer. He moved to Australia with his family when he was four, and attended school and college in Melbourne.

He first encountered Krishna consciousness in 1971, when one of his student friends showed him a copy of ‘Back to Godhead’, the magazine of the Hare Krishna movement.

Later, when his friend brought some prasadam home from the temple, he instantly fell in love with it. John had become a vegetarian at the age of 16 but was becoming tired of the bland menu, so was particularly attracted to the Hare Krishna vegetarian cooking.

By the time his friend gave him a Sri Isopanisad, John found himself extremely attracted to Srila Prabhupada’s purports, as well as the image of the movement’s Founder printed in the book.

Finding himself becoming won over to Krishna consciousness, he attended a Sunday feast at the new Krishna temple in Burnett Street, St K
