NEW PHILADELPHIA Although many people in Tuscarawas County aren't familiar with Robert D. Vandall, "his name would be recognized instantly by tens of thousands of music teachers and students.
"A lot of people around here wouldn't even realize they had an international composer living in the New Philadelphia area," Melanie Winn of New Philadelphia said.
Vandall, who would have turned 73 next Wednesday, died Thursday of cancer.
He retired after 38 years of owning and operating the Vandall Piano Studio in New Philadelphia with his wife, Karen.

The couple were married for 50 years. He also was a composer and arranger for Alfred Music in California.
"He was one of Alfred Music publishing's premier composers," Winn said, adding that he has more than 500 titles to his credit.
His music included folk, patriotic, sacred, general and seasonal works.
"We were close friends, apart from the music, but the music is what introduced us to each other," said Winn, a fellow p
