A Canadian imam who was arrested by religious police while on a pilgrimage to the Saudi Arabian city of Medina will continue with his plans there, even after he was beaten and thrown in a crowded jail for 24 hours, a witness said Monday.
Edmonton-based imam Usama Al-Atar had several bruises and cuts and looked “dishevelled” and “exhausted” after his release from Saudi custody Monday, said Mohamed Hayward, a British man who witnessed the arrest.
